“No,” a rumbling voice muttered in the darkness. “As soon as she is, we will notify Queen Zia.”

“The healers have requested that they be called,” a slightly familiar voice replied.

The annoyed sigh that most definitely came from Tyson made me want to smile. “We are aware and we want them to see her. But as they told us, there is not much more they can do until she wakes up. And like we have continuously told you, we would prefer to be alone with her while she heals. If there are any issues—or if she wakes up—we will call for the healers immediately.”

“Be sure to let us know, too. We owe her a great debt and want to ensure she is repaid.”

“Knowing Mina, she won’t expect anything in return. She will have seen it as her duty to protect your queen.” Tyson’s tone was tired, as if the weight of all of Regulus pressed down on his shoulders.

“We will leave it up to the two queens then. Once again, in addition to the healers, be sure to inform us the moment she awakens. Thank you.”

The snick of the lock catching cut off Tyson’s final protest. There was a shift of furniture, as if someone had readjusted their position in a chair, before Stryker made his presence known. “She should have woken up by now. According to Queen Zia, she only took a sip.”

“The healers said it would take time. They purified her blood with those sea sponges, now we just need to wait for her body to do the rest.” My heart warmed to know that Leander was in the room as well, but I was mildly confused as to why he and Stryker were both so tense. Wait. Purified my blood?

Needing to comfort them and no longer wishing to be a damsel in distress, I attempted to move. I was only able to twitch a finger before a blanket of fatigue pinned me to the bed. Annoyed that my own body disobeyed me, I let out a groan.

“Mina?” Leander questioned, the sounds of movement around the room notifying me that they were all coming closer. “Mina, can you open your eyes?”

Focusing every shred of energy I had into opening my eyes, I squinted just enough to make out Tyson by my side and Stryker and Leander standing near my feet.

“Hi,” Stryker whispered as he reached down and gently squeezed my ankle. The weight was both unbearable as well as so unbelievably wanted that I felt a tear trickle down my cheek. The moment he spied the wayward liquid, his smile dropped. Crawling over the foot of the bed, he came to rest at my side. “Shhh… you’re okay. You gave us a scare for a minute there, though.”

“Sorry,” I mouthed, my throat still refusing to cooperate.

“I’ll forgive you just this once. No more near-death experiences, though. Okay? I’m too young to be going gray.”

I tried to smile but could already feel myself falling asleep. Glancing toward Tyson, I beseeched him with my eyes, hoping he would understand what I wanted.
